Course Description
Our Costa Rican Holiday course gives you a unique opportunity to try you hand at a range of adventure activities while also spending a traditional Costa Rican Christmas with an indigenous family in the remote village of Piedras Blancas and celebrating New Year’s in the beach community of Manuel Antonio.
Backpacking and Homestays: Your journey begins by trekking through bio-diverse cloud and rain forests. Along the way, learn about rainforest biology, natural history, backcountry skills, team-building skills and conversational Spanish.
Several nights of the trek will be spent at the homes of indigenous families in the remote village of Piedras Blancas. Adventure and cross-cultural activities may include: a waterfall rappel, technical tree climb, harvesting or preparing traditional crops and foods, playing soccer with local children or community service projects.
There is also a solo element to this course in which students are given the experience to be alone in a safe wilderness setting. Solos enable students to reflect upon their lives and their Outward Bound experience while fully immersed in nature.
Surfing: Whether you’re a first-timer or a life-long surfer, you’ll enjoy some fantastic warm-water breaks at our beach base in Manuel Antonio.
Whitewater Rafting: Spend a day rafting one of Costa Rica’s world-class rivers while learning rafting and safety techniques from our expert staff.
Ringing in the New Year: After a day of surfing in the Pacific Ocean, you’ll get a taste of Costa Rican nightlife as you welcome in 2011.
Arrival Information:Transportation to and from San Jose International Airport (Airport Code: SJO) is provided by Outward Bound and is included in the cost of the course.
Upon arrival, you will be met by Outward Bound staff and transferred to our base, located in the rainforest 15 miles east of the Costa Rican capital, San Jose. On base, you will meet your instructors and be outfitted with a backpack and gear to get ready for your adventure. You will eat and sleep on base before departing to begin your course.
On the final day of the course, you will be transferred back to the airport at least 2 hours prior to your departure time.
