Eight Day Multi-Element
Day 0) Participants arrive at Juan Santa Maria International Airport in San Jose, Costa Rica. They are met by our staff and transferred to the mountainous Outward Bound base camp in San Ramon de Tres Rios. Welcome and orientation meeting, “Duffle Shuffle,” and overnight at base.
Day 1) Early morning transfer to the start of the hiking trail. Begin hiking through primary rainforest near the town of Santa Maria. The instructors will point out rainforest plants and animals en route as the group progresses downhill towards the remote village area of Piedras Blancas. Participants will camp overnight at the foot of a 100-foot waterfall or in a remote rustic shelter.
Day 2) Continue trekking through rainforest into the Savegre River valley where you’ll view spectacular rainforest scenery as well as several breathtaking waterfalls. The group will travel through several life zones that are home to many rainforest species including: parrots, parakeets, toucans and toucanettes, birds of prey, ocelots, three species of monkeys, sloths and tapirs. While mammals are much less frequently sighted, many bird species and evidence of mammals (i.e. tracks and vocalizations) can be seen and heard. For example, most groups will hear the eerie call of the mantled howler monkey. In the late afternoon the group will arrive at the Piedras Blancas Mestizo Village and stay overnight at a local family home.
Day 3) After breakfast the group will head to the neighboring hillsides of Piedras Blancas for a day of climbing. The group will scale of strangler fig and rappel down a 100-foot jungle waterfall. Both activities are supported by internationally standardized safety systems similar to rock climbing. Today participants will confront fears, overcome challenge and learn to support eachother.
Day 4) After a short morning hike to the final homestay, the group will work with the local family on a service project and interact with the community.You will have the opportunity to make cheese, milk cows or harvest sugar cane.
Day 5) Depart the final homestay after an early morning breakfast and hike three to four hours to the small town of Londres. From there transport will take your group to the well-known beach town of Manuel Antonio. Stay overnight in our base house.
Day 6) Spend the morning at the beach learning to surf or boogie boarding in the warm Pacific waters. Time permitting, you may also have the opportunity to explore Manuel Antonio National Park where you´ll see many wildlife including three species of monkeys, snakes, birds and sloths. In the afternoon, transfer back to base in San Ramon de Tres Rios.
Day 7) Wake up early and transfer to the Pacuare River. Spend the day whitewater rafting on Class III and Class IV rapids. After returning to base, enjoy a final dinner celebrating your accomplishments on course.
Day 8) Transfer from base to Juan Santa Maria International Airport to return home after your adventure in Costa Rica.
