| Meet our New Communications Director Larry Shaw is a new face around the CRROBS base. He has taken over as our new Communications Director and is looking forward to continuing the terrific work of his predecessor, Kathleen Sullivan. As his parents tell it, once Larry learned to walk and talk he never stopped doing either. Traveling and communicating were his passions from the start. He spent his youth experimenting with every form of expression he could think of: creative writing, theater arts, singing, stand-up comedy, photography and public speaking. Sadly, he can’t draw to save his life. After receiving his degree in journalism from Indiana University, Larry hit the road with the aim of seeing the planet and continuing to find new and effective ways of connecting with people. To date, he has lived in 13 countries, worked in over 25 and traveled through more than 50. He has served various organizations as a journalist, salesperson, project manager, sales/marketing director and as a director of international business development. He has managed multi-cultural teams of journalists and salespeople simultaneously working on projects across six continents. Never wanting to be all about business, Larry makes it a point to seek out adventure in whatever country he finds himself in. He has been fortunate enough to have skydived in Belgium; rafted the source of the Nile in Uganda; trekked through jungles in the Philippines; heli-hiked on glaciers in New Zealand; tracked dolphins off the coast of Oman and body-surfed along beaches in Brazil. A die-hard scuba addict, and certified PADI Divemaster, Larry also spent eight months working as a dive guide on a small island off the west coast of Thailand. While Larry is confident in his abilities and proud of his achievements – he also acknowledges that he is one very lucky human being. He always looks for ways to pay his good fortune forward either through hiring and training new staffers at various companies he’s worked at, or by encouraging young people to get out there and engage the world around them. One of Larry’s favorite quotes comes from Aldous Huxley: “Experience is not what happens to you; it’s what you do with what happens to you.” Taking on the challenge of being CRROBS’ Communications Director was Larry’s way to do something positive with the things that have happened to him. He’s very excited about being part of the team. In fact, he can’t stop talking about it. |
