International Surf Competition In Costa Rica

Costa Rica is host to The Billabong ISA World Surfing Games from August 1-8, 2009. The event will take place on Playa Hermosa, near the city of Jacó on the west coast, with 40 nations and 280 surfers participating in this international competition. This year’s contest will be the largest in its history and will be broadcast over the web to over 80 million people worldwide throughout the competition’s eight-day run, with additional coverage on ESPN and Fox Sports.

Jose Ureña, President of the Costa Rican Surfing Federation, expressed the honor, “I’m really happy for the opportunity that ISA and Billabong have given to us. To be hosts of this Costa Rica event is a like dream, to have so many countries enjoying our waves. It’s a unique occasion for us”.

Costa Rica is a top surfing destination, with warm water, consistent year-round surf, and over 700 miles of coastline, both on the Pacific and Caribbean coast. Costa Rica¹s surf tourism represents 20 percent of the annual income for the country. The expected thousands of national and foreign visitors will provide Jacó with more than $1 million in commerce.

Playa Hermosa is located directly south of Jacó and is considered one of the best places to surf in the world. All of our surf intensive courses camp at a Turtle Reserve on Playa Tulin, walking distance from Hermosa, to take advantage of the breaks in both Hermosa and Jacó.
