Staff Profile: Antonio Lopez Salazar
by Debbie Mayer
Almost every student who has been on course in the last year has had the pleasure of meeting Antonio. Whether you've experienced being a passenger while he's driving (the blaring music is an experience in itself) or guiding your raft, Antonio is one of CRROBS' finest.
Antonio is one of the many Lopez children. He is right in the middle of the family, as he has 9 older and 7 younger siblings. Antonio has been working with Costa Rica Outward Bound for 11 years. He spent his first 2.5 years as a land instructor, leading groups on the backpacking phase of courses. Once he learned how to surf & kayak, Antonio never looked back and became a river instructor for 8 years.
Antonio has many kayaking stories, such as the time the water was so high on the Pejibaye River that a section that usually takes 2 hours only took him 20 minutes (including when he and Joe Ewing, a fellow river instructor)were both stuck in holes). And yes, he's even lost both his paddle and kayak in the river (in the Savegre in the rapid called Come Gringo- Gringo Eater). When not kayaking, Antonio is usually playing soccer (fútbol), driving, or spending time with his family (the photo to the right pictures Antonio with his children, Antony and Lisbeth).
Antonio has been living on base for the last year, working as our Logistics Coordinator. He enjoys Costa Rica Outward Bound because working here has given him the opportunity to meet new people and always try new outdoors activities. As Logistics Coordinator, Antonio fills every role- as driver, raft guide, organizing re-supplies, and making sure that the base is stocked with equipment and food. Antonio's new goal? Learning how to surf.
