Surfing with Costa Rica Outward Bound
by Greg Albritton
Here at Costa Rica Outward Bound our students get to surf some of the best waves in Central America. Check out the breakdown of the surf breaks we visit:
Playa Jaco – Located in the Central Pacific of Costa Rica, Playa Jaco is a great place for both advanced and beginning surfers. Expect fun waves from knee to head high at this popular beach break. Bigger swells do not hold very well at Playa Jaco, but on a high tide you can find some nice waves even when the surf is big. You can expect to see rays jumping out of the water in the mornings, a truly amazing thing to see!
Playa Hermosa/Playa Tulin – One of the most famous surfing beaches in Costa Rica, Playa Hermosa in a long beautiful (Hermosa) stretch of beach located just a few kilometers South of Playa Jaco. This beach is known for its hollow barrels – expect to see some amazing surfers at Playa Hermosa getting barreled on lefts and rights at this beach break in Costa Rica. Playa Hermosa was the site of the ISA World Surfing Games in August 2009.
Playa Manuel Antonio – The beach at Manuel Antonio is ideal for beginners. This beach break generally has smaller surf than the breaks in the area and is ideal for learning how to control a surfboard in the water. Not only will you enjoy some nice waves to learn on, the landscape is incredible – small islands off the coast and the palm trees on the beach make it an ideal place to soak of the beauty of Costa Rica. North will take you to the break known as Playitas, a fun wave for more experienced surfers.
Witch’s Rock (Roca Bruja) – Made famous from the movie Endless Summer II, Roca Bruja is considered to be one of the best waves around. The long hike into the break makes it all the better. While on course, our students get to camp on the beach, an ideal situation for catching as many waves as possible! This break works best on mid- and high-tides - expect to be in the water with very few people and a lot of waves.
Playa Santa Teresa – Located on the Nicoya Peninsula, Playa Santa Teresa is a beach break with sold lefts and rights. This beach break picks up a good amount of swells, and can handle surf just a bit over head. Chest to head high is a good size for Santa Teresa on a mid-tide.
Playa Avellana – In the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica, our students have the opportunity to surf Playa Avellana. This break works on just about any tide, rising or falling, and is a fun beach break with both lefts and rights. Playa Avellana can handle surf just overhead and is a great place to get some barrels.
