Keeping Up With Our Instructors
It takes a special kind of person to be a Costa Rica Outward Bound instructor- strong, responsible, caring, kind, adventurous (the list goes on and on). Our instructors are spread all over the world in the off-season, the only commonality is that they are all busy. Read below for some brief updates on their lives.
Dunia is busy packing up her stuff in Avellanas and house-hunting for a move to Nicaragua's San Juan del Sur in early November. She hopes to expand her jewelry business there, as well as start a Surf School.
Amy is in San Luis Obispo, CA finishing her last year of college. She is living in a beautiful farm area surrounded by lots of hiking trails and only a short way from the beach. So, when not hard at work with her classes she is busy exploring and adventuring. She feels so lucky that she got to spend time in such an incredible place with such awesome people and wishes everyone well!
Owen is in Peru studying Spanish. He is staying at a hostel in Miraflores and meeting a lot of new people, practicing his Spanish every day. He was volunteering at an Orphanage in Callao, Peru for some time, but is now in Miraflores, Peru, enjoying a tranquilo lifestyle and working hard everyday on his Spanish. He will be traveling around Peru soon and hopes to find a job down there once his Spanish improves.
Joe just finished leading a 2 week course for Outward Bound Mexico. He ate some of the best food he's ever had (not on course, but in Mexico) and is now home in Colorado. He hopes to do some snowboarding and backcountry skiing before he returns to CRROBS in the next few weeks.
Kendra is serving as an AmeriCorps member in Seattle, Washington. She works at a non-profit called Passages Northwest that works to empower girls through art and outdoor exploration. Her position is Program Assistant for the Wilderness programs and GirlsRock! programs. She mainly works on an after school rock-climbing program (GirlsRock!) that reaches out to girls of all backgrounds.
Olivia is going to New College of Florida in Sarasota. She loves it, and classes keep her busy, but in her free time there's plenty to do (kayaking in the bay, rock climbing, tree climbing, yoga, etc.). It reminds her of Costa Rica- it rains just about every day, it's ridiculously humid, and there are tropical plants and parrots all over the place.
Mauren is excited to lead the hiking portion of Water & Wave Semester, and she looks forward to being back at base with all the CRROBS staff.
Orlando, Carlos Granados, and Abraham are leading 20 local students in a weeklong course this October to show these students more of their own country. They'll be backpacking, surfing, and doing community service projects.
Zach found out his grandfather built a few boats that won America’s Cup, so he has started working at a yatch club and is having a great time taking up sailing again.
Before leaving on Tri-Country for 85 days with Santiago, Donna taught Dona Carmen how to make her amazing crepes. She's pumped to get back to hiking again!
Shannon returned to Victoria, Canada and spent of bit of time relaxing at her lake "shack" with no electricity and such, but came back early due to six stitches in her hand. Since being back she has been working at a hotel in Food and Beverage and up to her usual craziness-rock climbing, scuba, surfing, hiking, cycling, running, etc.
Alex went bungee jumping outside San Jose then went home to South Carolina to see to his first college football game. He's proud of his new 5'11'' Chilli surfboard with a rounded pin tail which he's excited to try out with Water & Wave in the "gnarly, macking surf" of Costa Rica & Nicaragua.
Ryan is in South Korea, looking out the window at the ocean.
